| Carolinajim's DIY Bicycle Canoe Trailer Trial and error was used to build a bicycle towed canoe Trailer to transport my old Coleman Scanoe down to the nearby White Oak River. The first picture is the final model followed by close ups of key components. The key components are 3/4" threaded rod for the axle, two wheel barrow wheels, various pieces of scrap aluminum, treated 2X4 pine for the trailer base runners, and a standard stud length 2X4 for the trailer tongue. It is pretty easy to make this Trailer with standard hand tools like an electric drill, hack saw and wrenches. No welding is required. All of the components can be purchased a Lowes or Home Depot. Search using the Google portal above if you would like to see bike canoe haulers that other people have made. Type in the words bicycle and canoe. The last two pictures on this page are of an earlier prototype made of PVC pipe which proved to be too fragile for the weight of my canoe and equipment. My Scanoe weighs about 100 pounds, the trailer weighs about 50 pounds. My mountain bike easily hauls the canoe with paddles, fishing poles etc on relatively flat terrain. A canoe trailer is also a great way to haul your camping gear. Think about taking a canoe/bike camping trip...lot's of fun! Be careful, build strong and wear your helmet! If you plan to do some fishing, the DIY minnow trap to the left might be useful. |

are pictures of an earlier prototype made of PVC pipe. PVC pipe is probably a good option for lighter canoes or kayaks. |
